Mame not finding any roms + other questions

I bought a new GP2X Wiz and am working on getting it setup. Here's what I've got: The Wiz and a fresh 32gb SD card, which is really a microSD put into an SD adapter card. Works great and Wiz seems to recognize it without any trouble. I blank erased the entire SD and formatted as Fat32.

I setup game/ at the root of the card, and unzipped the Mame4All emulator into that folder (with all of it's subfolders). In the /roms/ folder, I put in just a small few for testing. I put in Joust, Joust 2, Shao-lins Road, etc. Just a few. I also was careful to make sure that those directories are labeled according to the "gamelist.txt" file which is in the mame4all zip. So the filepath to the actual mame files is for example:

(sd card root):game/roms/joust2/ic08_r1.cpu (and so on)

Still, whenever I use the Wiz to go to "launcher", then I find mame.gpe, it shows the screen for a second, then "error: no games are found" (don't remember exact quote).

I have tried many different things, but I haven't found any way to make this work. I was able to make the GameBoy Advance stuff work perfectly, and have about 30 games installed for that. Once I launch the GBA emulator, they show up and I can easily choose and play games. But with MAME, I cannot.

Here's an update on Joust: I was tinkering with it on my PC today and kept running into the same "factory settings restored" message in the regular version of MAME. After some research I discovered that to bypass the message, all one needs to do is hit F2 to exit service mode. So I got to thinking that there must be some sort of equivalent function for entering/exiting service mode in MAME4ALL Wiz, and if I could figure it out, would allow me to run Joust on my Wiz. Needless to say I now have Joust running but am not 100% sure whether I figured out service mode on the Wiz or just got lucky messing with buttons. Here is what I did ...

Once the "Factory Settings Restored" message came up, I hit L + R + Select twice, and then just L + R to pause and unpause it. After that the message went away and I was able to play Joust.

On a slightly unrelated note I was running into a similar glitch with Defender, where it got stuck on the initialization screen ... however, exiting the game and going back in fixed it.

For MAME scaling issues with some games, you can change the display settings to correct it. First, select the rom you want inside MAME4ALL by pressing the B button. It will then show a list of default options such as Wiz Clock, Video Depth, and other settings. The third option down is Video Aspect and has a default value of "Normal". Simply go down to it and use the R and L shoulder buttons to cycle through the values. Try setting it to "Scale" for Popeye and it should now load properly for you. I have several games with a Video Aspect of "Scale" such as Popeye, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, and Tapper. For the higher-end games such as Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam I also set the Wiz clock to 800 mhz.

For both Joust and Joust 2 it ran through the initialization process but always got stuck on the "Factory Settings Restored" screen. Could not get past it. Not sure what else to try there.

Pretty much EVERYTHING is working now, except Popeye and something else, I can't remember, don't scale -- oh, Tapper. They appear super huge and are unplayable because they aren't scaled down for this window. Also, are you able to get Joust or Joust2 to work on Mame? I can't. Just curious if you're able to do it.

I didn't reply yet because I was finishing my first game of MAPPY in mame! Awesome. What a beautiful thing. I found absolutely NO documentation or even anything in the forums that said that the files must be zipped still. The docs in Mame4All say in fact, to place the "directories" in the roms folder.

So naturally, I carefully unzipped all of the files for each game, making sure that I used the proper naming for each directory for each game, and placing the unzipped game files into each accordingly. Anyway, thanks again for your help, and seriously, I wouldn't mind at all making a contribution to your new site as a way of saying thank you.

First, it sounds like you are storing MAME and the roms in a different way than I am. I maintain a similar structure as you, but the most fundamental difference is that I keep the roms in a .zip format. I find that it's much easier to manage all of them and I don't have to deal with a ton of different sub folders.

So for example, I have things structured such as:

Running TMNT in MAME:
(sd card root):game/MAME/roms/tmnt.zip

Running Metroid Fusion in GBA:
(sd card root):game/GameboyAdvance/roms/Metroid_Fusion.zip

As you can see above I have a different subdirectory for each emulator to keep the separation in there, and then the corresponding roms are in the "roms" folder (for each emulator) as .zip files.

I also recommend looking at the MAME4ALL games list which shows (from what I know of) all of the roms which MAME4ALL currently supports on the Wiz. I cannot attest to the accuracy of completeness of the list, but you should at least double check that the roms which you are trying to play are in it.

Can you please try to maintain the roms in separate .zip files, placed directly in the MAME/roms subfolder? Please let me know how it goes either way and we can try to solve this in greater detail if necessary...
